Robert Desmond, Award-Winning Journalist, Dies

Robert W. Desmond, former educator and newspaperman, died Saturday. He was 85.

Desmond, a La Jolla resident, was a former journalism professor at Stanford and Northwestern universities and chairman of the journalism department at the University of California at Berkeley.

An award-winning journalist, Desmond worked for numerous papers, including the Milwaukee Journal, Louisville Courier-Journal and the San Diego Union. He also was a columnist for the Copley news service from 1971 to 1974.

He is survived by his wife, Emily, and two children, Christopher Desmond of Los Angeles and Carolyn Desmond of Long Beach.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church Chapel.
