Soviet dissident Yelena Bonner does not believe that her public remarks at a synagogue in Newton, Mass., violated her pledge to Soviet authorities not to talk to reporters while she is in the West for medical treatment, her daughter, Tatiana Yankelevich, said. Bonner’s remarks at the synagogue were widely reported by the media. But Yankelevich noted that Bonner directed her comments to the worshipers, not the press, and added, “The purpose of her visit is not to make public appearances.”
