SAN DIEGO OPERA LISTS FOUR PRODUCTIONS FOR 1986-87 SEASON

A new production of Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Hollaender” is included among the four offerings in San Diego Opera’s 1986-87 season.

“Hollaender,” directed by Bernd Benthaak and designed by Bill Gorgensen will be presented at the Civic Theatre Feb. 7, 10, 13 and 15, 1987. The cast includes Roger Roloff (in the title role), Sabine Hass (Senta), Kevin Langan (Daland) and Siegfried Jerusalem (Eric). Matthias Kuntzsch will conduct.

The season will open with Puccini’s “Tosca,” (Oct. 1, 14, 17, 19, 1986) with Marilyn Zschau in the title role. Other principal singers include Vladimir Popov (Cavaradossi) and George Fortune (Scarpia). Sam Wanamaker will direct, with Thomas Fulton conducting.

Also on the schedule: Bellini’s “Norma” (Oct. 25, 28, 31 and Nov. 2) with Cristina Deutekom, Delores Ziegler, Antonio Barasorda and Nicola Ghiuselev (Benthaak will direct, Edoardo Mueller will conduct); Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (Feb. 21, 24, 27, March 1, 1987) with Hermann Prey, Susanne Mentzer, Mark DuBois, Langan and Francois Loup (Wolfgang Weber will direct, San Diego Opera music administrator and associate conductor Karen Keltner will be in the pit).

Also, a double bill of “The Telephone” and “The Medium,” two one-act operas by Gian Carlo Menotti at the Old Globe Theatre (May 9, 11, 13, 15, 17) with the composer directing and Keltner conducting. The cast for “The Telephone” lists Amy Burton and Wayne Turnage; for “Medium,” the principal singers include Beverly Evans, Nadia Pelle and Francis Menotti (the composer’s adopted son).

The San Diego season includes a concert by soprano Joan Sutherland (Jan. 23, with Richard Bonynge conducting) and recitals by soprano Kiri Te Kanawa (Feb. 28) and tenor Siegfried Jerusalem (Jan. 26).
