The State Bar’s plea for voluntary dues payment from California’s 101,000 lawyers has so far been answered by 5,673 attorneys, but Bar officials are hopeful that the number will increase as the Feb. 1 payment deadline approaches. Bar spokeswoman Anne Charles said the number of lawyers who have already handed over their dues and the total paid--more than $1.38 million--both exceed comparable figures at this time last year, when only $852,000 in mandatory dues had been paid by 5,066 lawyers. Mandatory dues were suspended by the state Assembly in 1984. A bill authorizing the Bar to collect mandatory dues for 1986 was blocked in the Assembly in the final hours of this year’s session.
