R.H. Estates : Quarry Report Requested

The Planning Commission has asked for a status report from its staff on a proposed 300-acre residential project centered on the old Chandler gravel quarry. Portions of the project, which calls for 600 homes, would be located in Torrance and discussions are under way between the planning staffs of the two cities and Cayman Development Co., which is proposing the project. The report should go to the commission in January.

The planning staff recommended that the commission hold a community workshop on the development, but commission Chairman William Ailor said that may not be necessary because the project could be discussed at regular commission meetings, which are public. He said commissioners also may conduct a field inspection of the property.

Earlier this year, the commission held several meetings on a “planned development zone” concept for the quarry project, and residents from Rolling Hills Estates and Torrance expressed concerns about traffic, street access to the development and preservation of horse trails in the quarry area. The zone concept was shelved in June so discussions could be held with Torrance officials and with Cayman, which has yet to submit a formal development proposal to the city.
