The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant’s Unit 2 reactor went into an unscheduled automatic shutdown during tests, officials said. “The test measures the plant’s response to a sudden drop in the load, or electrical demand, on the main electrical generator,” plant spokesman Ron Weinberg said. He said the purpose of the test was “to identify and correct any problems prior to operation.” The Unit 2 reactor, fired up for the first time in August, is scheduled to begin commercial operation next year.
