Santa Ana : Five Drivers Arrested After Checkpoint Tests
Five people were arrested at a California Highway Patrol sobriety checkpoint in Tustin on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, it was announced Sunday.
Patrolman Harrison Rufus said 816 drivers were stopped at the checkpoint on 17th Street west of Prospect Avenue during the operation late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Field sobriety tests were administered to 19 motorists, and of those, five were later booked into Orange County Jail.
The site, just east of the Costa Mesa Freeway, was chosen in part because of the high incidence of drunk driving arrests and collisions there, according to the highway patrol.
Between 10 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, drivers eastbound on 17th Street were warned that they were approaching a sobriety checkpoint. Each car was stopped for about 30 seconds. Drivers suspected of being under the influence were taken to a premarked area for further testing.
