President Zia ul-Haq announced the end of martial law in Pakistan, more than eight years after it was imposed. Zia told Parliament he is lifting military rule because he is satisfied with the achievements of his regime since he seized power in 1977. Zia had promised to end martial law but had not set a date. Zia also named the first civilian governors in Pakistan’s four provinces since the 1977 coup that toppled Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was later hanged.
