A total of 37 motorists suspected of drunk driving were arrested at weekend sobriety checkpoints in three Southern California counties, authorities said. Five of the arrests came at the first roadblock ever set up within Los Angeles city limits. Police officers stopped 560 cars at the busy San Fernando Valley intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Covello Street in Van Nuys, an area where police say a high number of traffic deaths are related to alcohol use. Another 32 people were arrested at California Highway Patrol roadblocks in East Los Angeles and in Orange and San Diego counties as part of the CHP’s continuing crackdown.
