Bid to Halt Taxi License Termination Fails

A Los Angeles federal judge has rejected a petition by three Hollywood-based taxicab companies to stop the termination of their franchise licenses by Los Angeles city officials.
U.S. District Judge A. Wallace Tashima on Monday rejected a motion for a temporary restraining order requested by the three cab companies--Celebrity, Valley Celebrity and Red Top.
The companies, whose cabs make up nearly 15% of the 1,100 taxis in Los Angeles, charged that the city bowed to political pressures when it refused to extend their operating licenses for 1986.
The companies have had a labor dispute with some of their drivers since last July. The City Council refused to renew the companies’ franchises because of noncompliance with municipal regulations governing driver qualifications.
