John Lee, UCLA’s record-setting kicker, had the opportunity to talk with Chuck Long, Iowa’s record-setting quarterback, a few weeks ago when they were brought together for one of their several All-American functions.

Said Lee: “He’s a heck of a nice guy. I talked to him for a long time. He has a lot of respect for UCLA. I don’t think he was just saying that, either. He talked about every guy in our secondary by name. Did I give away any secrets? Are you kidding? He already knew everything.”

UCLA quarterback Matt Stevens, on why he didn’t take Iowa up on its invitation to visit there when he was being recruited as a student at Fountain Valley High School: “I was concentrating on the Pac-10 schools because I wanted to stay close enough to be able to go home. My dad works for an airline--Air Cal--that doesn’t go to Iowa City.”

The Rose Bowl field looked great Monday as the Pasadena Jaycees were putting on the final touches. The grass has been regrown since a motocross and was bright green after being sprayed with a dose of iron a few days earlier. The rose at midfield and the end zones were being painted with 1,200 gallons of water-base paint that includes a fertilizer.
