The state has acquired 6 1/2 square miles in southern San Mateo County, enabling it to prevent threatened development in the Cascade Ranch area. The action creates a 2,400-acre state park that will contain a privately operated campground and conference center, said Bill Dempsey, field representative for the Trust for Public Land, a nonprofit group devoted to creating parks. The new park will serve as a buffer for the elephant seal breeding ground at Ano Nuevo State Reserve. It will be linked by hiking trails to Big Basin Redwoods State Park on the east and to Butano State Park on the north.
