Maynard W. Woodard, 79; Designer of Major Buildings, Illustrator for Films
Maynard W. Woodard, a one-time set designer and illustrator for films who helped design such local and international landmarks as The Music Center, Sports Arena and Police Administration Building in Los Angeles, the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and Hilton hotels in Havana and Cairo, is dead.
He was 79 and died Tuesday at Saddleback Community Hospital in Laguna Hills.
Woodard, a graduate of the University of Illinois and USC, was senior vice president and chief of design for Welton Becket & Associates, one of the nation’s best known architectural firms.
He moved to Becket’s firm in 1945 after working at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Bros. and RKO Studios. He participated in the design of several Century City projects, the Hawaiian Village in Honolulu and Mt. Sinai Hospital.
He retired in 1971, said his wife, Clem, who suggested contributions in his name to the Regents of the University of California, Parkinson’s Research, c/o Charles Markham, M.D., Department of Neurology, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles 90024.
