Six-Point Play Spurs USIU Cagers to Fifth Straight

In defeating Brooklyn College, 98-83, Friday, the USIU men’s basketball team accomplished something it hadn’t done since the 1980-81 season, it won five straight games. USIU raised its record to 7-5 in beating Brooklyn (4-11) at Southwestern College.

Joel Yezbak led USIU with 32 points, Carl Shenault added 21 and Duane Cross had 18. USIU trailed, 44-41, at halftime, but turned the game around early in the second half.

Brooklyn led, 61-56, but USIU took the lead on one play. A field goal attempt by Cross ended in a goaltending violation, an intentional foul and two technical fouls on Brooklyn. USIU turned Cross’s two-point attempt into six points and a 62-61 lead. USIU pulled away from that point.

Fresno Pacific 62, UCSD 61--Greg Kamansky scored at the buzzer for UC San Diego, but the Tritons still fell one point short to visiting Fresno Pacific. Kamansky scored 18 for the Tritons (6-6), and teammate Brian Backens added 20. Tony Salata led Fresno Pacific with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
