Israeli intelligence sources believe that Libyan and Syrian agents carried out the Dec. 27 airport attacks at Rome and Vienna, using the name of Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal “merely as a cover,” a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Sunday Times of London quoted anonymous Israeli sources as saying that Abu Nidal could not have planned the nearly simultaneous attacks in Rome and Vienna because he is suffering from liver cancer and incapable of masterminding such a complex operation.

According to the paper’s sources, Abu Nidal was treated for cancer in East Germany and has now retired in Libya or Syria.
