The union representing 500 major league hockey players is seeking a new contract that would give NHL veterans the right to refuse being traded, chief negotiator Alan Eagleson said.

Eagleson, executive director of the National Hockey League Players Assn., said the union has proposed an agreement that would give 10-year veterans the right to refuse any trade. Five- and seven-year veterans would have the right to reject some trades under the proposal, he said.

The association’s four-year contract with the 21 NHL clubs expires at the end of this season.
