A ‘Welcome Back’ Gift

WASHINGTON —
Sarah McClendon, the sometimes raucous reporter who has crossed words and wits in news conferences with the last eight Presidents, received a “welcome back” gift from President Reagan on Tuesday--the first question at his first news conference of the year.
McClendon, 75, who operates the McClendon News Service, recently had hip surgery and had been absent from press sessions. Traditionally, reporters from United Press International and the Associated Press alternate in asking the first question.
