Terrorists Arrived by Train for Raids, Italy, Austria Say
The top police officials of Austria and Italy said today that the eight gunmen who carried out the Rome and Vienna airport attacks Dec. 27 traveled by train from Yugoslavia, Hungary and probably Switzerland.
Italian Interior Minister Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and his Austrian counterpart, Karl Blecha, met for two hours to share information on their investigations of the attacks, in which 19 people died.
Blecha said the four men who fired weapons and threw grenades at the Rome airport arrived by train from Yugoslavia.
“The four terrorists in Austria that attacked us also came by train,” he said--two from Hungary and the other two probably from Switzerland.
Hungary has been assisting in the investigation and provided a picture of a missing fourth man involved in the Austrian attack. Hungary has been noticeably silent as other Warsaw Pact countries attacked the United States for imposing sanctions on Libya.
The United States accused Libya of backing the Palestinian terror faction believed responsible for the attacks, but Blecha today repeated his earlier assertion that there is no direct evidence linking the attacks to Libya or any other Middle East nation.
