A 60-year-old deaf woman died in a San Francisco apartment blaze because she could not hear shouted warnings to get out, firefighters said. Neighbors said a passer-by spotted the flames that apparently began in a garage of a three-story building. He alerted residents, but Wille Whittaker remained inside. There were no other injuries.
