‘Disney’s World’ Author

Charles Solomon, in writing of my new book, “Disney’s World” (Book Review, Dec. 29) appears to have based his review on a press handout from the Disney organization, citing “errors” in this unauthorized and independent biography. It is by now well known in the media that Disney repeatedly asked to see the text of “Disney’s World,” but I refused to do so in order to prevent them from “sanitizing” it, as they are known to have done with past publications about Walt Disney. However, as I explain in “Disney’s World,” the text of the captions to their copyright photographs and the names and facts in the Appendix were submitted to the Disney archivist, David E. Smith, with a request for checking.

Smith has since written to me to apologize for not catching and correcting two of the errors to which Mr. Solomon draws particular attention in his review.

Incidentally, I may not be as great an expert on cartoons and animation as Mr. Solomon, but most of the experts I consulted for my book certainly are, and their statements, sent to them for their approval, comprise most of the “misinformation” about the art of animation to which he so scornfully refers.
