The numbers continue wild for Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories.”

The Dec. 29 episode, written by Spielberg and directed by Clint Eastwood, attracted the smallest audience yet for the NBC series--about 11 million homes. But last Sunday’s installment, about a baby-sitter who uses voodoo on her young charges, drew the second-best ratings of the season--nearly 18 million homes, topped only by the premiere episode Sept. 29.

For the season, “Amazing” ranks 27th among 75 network series, averaging a respectable 25 share, or 25% of all homes watching TV. It generally runs second in its time slot to CBS’ “Murder, She Wrote.”

To New York Times critic John O’Connor, Spielberg “has delivered a spotty skein of cliches, sentimentality and ordinary hokum.” But NBC program chief Brandon Tartikoff claims he’s satisfied.
