Answers on Two Items

Two items in the Westside section deserve answers. One, a letter from a Westside parent expressing her thoughts and anger at the group test scores which have been used to condemn our schools and teachers (Times, Jan. 5). I agree with her 100%. Having been a head counselor in a Westside junior high school, we used the individual test scores as the best way to help children improve their skills. Our teachers did an excellent job and our parents were most cooperative.

The second item, entirely unrelated, really made me angry. It was “Slow Start on the Pan Pacific” (Times, Jan. 5). All I could gather from the article was the millions and millions of dollars it is going to cost . . . to get a historical monument in addition to various kinds of movies (and) a hotel, but nothing about where cars are going to be parked.

The final irony--our county paid $10.45 million for the property in 1979, and the piles of debris left from the demolition of the auditorium are still there and grafitti covers the auditorium. Why doesn’t our county provide services to keep the property clean? I think Supervisor (Ed) Edelman needs to make some explanation to those of us who live in this area and who don’t like what’s happening.
