17-Year-Old Killed as Auto Overturns
A 17-year-old Mexican youth was killed Saturday night when the car in which he was riding overturned on a curve, throwing him from the car, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was identified as Lucio Ordonez, a Mexican citizen who lived in Vista. He suffered a fractured skull in the crash, said a spokesman for the San Diego County coroner’s office.
Highway police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as Artemio Durand, 18, allegedly fled the scene and could not be found.
The accident occurred at about 9:50 p.m. Saturday along a recently oiled and sanded curve of Gopher Canyon Road, police said. Police said that the car approached the slick curve too rapidly and overturned. Ordonez was dead at the scene.
