A Times article (Dec. 11), “President Orders Lie Detector Tests,” claims that William Casey “refused on principle” to take a lie detector test when he became director of Central Intelligence in 1981, but that he later did so.

Casey never refused to take a polygraph examination. In fact, when appointed director he believed he had an obligation to undergo the examination promptly and he did so.
