Newport Beach/ Costa Mesa : Group Supplies $38,122 in Material to Schools

Eight schools in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa are getting a total of $38,122 in educational materials this year, thanks to private fund-raising by the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation.

The foundation this week announced the 50 projects in eight schools it had selected from 82 applications submitted this year.

Costa Mesa and Newport Beach parents formed the foundation in 1982, four years after the state’s passage of tax-cutting Proposition 13, to provide additional financial support for school programs. The foundation solicits money in annual drives from parents and companies in the two cities.

Since 1982, part of the foundation funds have been used to hire part-time remedial-reading teachers at six elementary schools. The foundation later began helping to pay for elementary classroom music specialists and computer-training programs.

This year, the foundation grants helped supply a $1,000, 25-inch color monitor for computer-programming students at Corona del Mar High School and textbooks and other materials for English students at Back Bay High School.

Other schools getting grants this year from the foundation were Estancia High, Ensign Intermediate, TeWinkle Intermediate, Costa Mesa High, Newport Harbor High and Davis Intermediate.
