British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher appeared in the House of Commons and strenuously defended beleaguered Trade and Industry Secretary Leon Brittan, who some felt might be forced to resign after being accused of misleading Parliament. The debate stems from a dispute over the fate of a small British helicopter maker, Westland PLC, which led to the resignation of Defense Secretary Michael Heseltine. Thatcher denied that Brittan “misled the House,” and opposition Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock seemed to be holding off his attack until today’s full-scale debate.
