A University of Georgia official said some athletes were enrolled not for any academic purpose, but to make money for the school, according to a transcript read in federal court.

“There is no real sound academic reason for (the athletes) being here other than to be utilized to produce income,” Leroy Ervin, coordinator of the university’s remedial Developmental Studies Program, said during a 1983 faculty meeting. “They are used as a kind of raw material in the production of some goods to be sold as whatever product, and they get nothing in return.”

The meeting was recorded secretly by Teresa Timmons, a professor in the program. Attorneys read portions of the transcript during her testimony Tuesday in the civil trial of a lawsuit brought by instructor Jan Kemp, who claims she was fired because she spoke out against special treatment for athletes and others.
