Heidi Jungling scored 20 points to lead the UC San Diego women’s basketball team to a 58-56 upset of Whittier Tuesday at Triton Pavilion. UCSD (7-7) lost to the Poets (9-4), 74-51, last month at Whittier.

The Tritons built a 33-24 halftime lead and never trailed. Whittier had three chances to tie the score in the final minute after UCSD missed the front end of three one-and-one situations. But the Poets failed to get off a shot. The Tritons stole the ball from the Poets on each of those possessions.

Patty Palmer scored 14 for Whittier and Julie Curtis scored 13 points, 13 below her season average.

“We barely shot 20% the first time we played them,” UCSD Coach Judy Malone said. “We shot 40% tonight. We also played much better defense.”

UCSD forced Whittier into 27 turnovers and also had 11 steals.
