Freshman Jeff Lebo scored 18 points off the bench and senior Brad Daugherty added 15 Tuesday night at College Park, Md., to lead No. 1-ranked North Carolina to a 71-67 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland.

North Carolina relied heavily on outside shooting as Lebo and Steve Hale, who scored 10 points, hit critical jumpers down the stretch.

The four-point victory, the closest decision this season for North Carolina, ran the Tar Heels’ record to 17-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.

Len Bias scored 20 points to pace Maryland, 10-5 and 0-3. The Terps’ three conference losses have come to ACC heavyweights North Caro lina, Duke and Georgia Tech, each ranked among the nation’s top five teams.

North Carolina, which plays host to Duke Saturday, trailed Maryland, 65-61, with five minutes remaining. But free-throw and perimeter shooting keyed the Tar Heel comeback.

“I don’t know if we were getting nervous or what,” Maryland forward Derrick Lewis said after the Terrapins, perhaps getting too cocky, were unable to hang on.

North Carolina guard Kenny Smith said: “There was still a lot of time left. It seemed like they were celebrating a little early on the court.”

Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell agreed. “I hate to lose,” he said. “I despise it. I thought we played very well for 35 minutes. The last five we played like a bunch of hotdogs.”

Missouri 55, Oklahoma State 51--Dan Bingenheimer scored 16 points and Jeff Strong added 15 at Columbia, Mo., as the Tigers raised their overall record to 14-5 and their Big Eight mark to 1-1. Terry Faggins of Oklahoma State (9-5, 0-1) led all scorers with 24 points.
