The City of San Diego should think about buying the Sears store on Cleveland Avenue in Hillcrest and converting it into a central library, a City Council committee was told Wednesday.
After more than 33 years, the store is closing its doors in March, and its 12-acre site--with 265,000 square feet of building space and enough parking for 1,100 cars--would be desirable for a new central library, Library Commissioner Bob Magness told the council’s Public Services and Safety Committee.
Magness said the citywide Friends of the San Diego Library voted Saturday to urge consideration of the site.
Magness also urged the council to act quickly to acquire the site. Councilwoman Judy McCarty concurred, and the committee voted to ask the city manager to investigate the proposal. The manager’s report is due back to the committee Feb. 5.
