The American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation’s largest farm organization, today elected Iowa farmer Dean Kleckner, who opposes government intervention in agriculture, as president on the sixth ballot.

On the final ballot, Kleckner defeated Harry Bell 141 to 138. Bell, president of the South Carolina Farm Bureau, is a supporter of government farm programs that grew out of the Great Depression. Kleckner, 53, has been president of the Iowa Farm Bureau for 10 years.
