Three Mile Island’s Unit 1 nuclear reactor will be brought to a “cold shutdown” for repairs for the first time since its restart three months ago, plant operator GPU Nuclear Corp. said in Harrisburg, Pa. Beginning tonight, operators will cool the reactor so a leak in a steam line can be repaired, officials said. The repair work is expected to begin Sunday and to take about one week. During the repairs, the reactor will be in “cold shutdown,” meaning the temperature inside the reactor’s core will be less than 200 degrees, plant spokesman Gordon Tomb said.
