Citing increased sales of its contraceptive sponge during 1985, VLI Corp. Friday predicted sharply reduced losses for the year ended Dec. 31. For all of 1985, VLI expects losses to total $1.4 million, a reduction of 77% from its 1984 loss of $6.2 million. For the fourth quarter, the company projected a loss of $500,000, 64% less that the $1.4-million loss of a year earlier.

However, the Irvine-based company said its fourth-quarter sales are likely to dip slightly, to $3.7 million from $3.8 million, because of a reduced advertising campaign during the period. VLI said, though, that sales for the year are estimated to total $16.7 million, up 34% from $12.4 million during 1984.

Advertising dropped off sharply during the last six weeks of last year, but VLI has since resumed its media campaign and plans to “slightly more than double” its advertising in 1986, according to company president Robert Elliot.
