U.S. Vetoes Resolution Condemning Israel

UNITED NATIONS — The United States used its veto in the Security Council on Friday to block a Lebanese resolution “strongly deploring” Israeli violence in southern Lebanon and asking again that all Israeli troops leave the country.
The vote was 11-1 with 3 abstentions to adopt the Lebanese resolution. Britain, Australia and Denmark abstained.
U.S. delegate Patricia Byrne said the United States opposed the resolution because it was “negative and one-sided” and took no account of the renewal of attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon.
The United States is one of five permanent members to the council, each of whom alone can block passage of a resolution by voting no. The other permanent members are China, France, the Soviet Union and Britain.
