Brea : Council Expected to Ban Sales, Use of Fireworks
Fireworks appear on their way out in Brea--except during the big 4th of July bash held at a high school stadium.
On Tuesday, City Council members are expected to adopt an ordinance banning the sales and use of fireworks. At the same time, the city officials also are expected to vote on permitting the city’s annual fireworks show at Brea-Olinda High School.
At their last meeting, council members voted 3 to 2 to tentatively approve a fireworks ban without realizing that it would also have canceled the city-sponsored fireworks display, which will be staged for the 13th year this July, Assistant City Manager Denise Ovrom said.
Councilmen Gene Leyton and Carrey Nelson have objected to the proposed new law, saying it would be difficult to enforce and may not represent the wishes of the community.
During a Nov. 5 advisory vote, a slim majority of those voting cast their ballots for a fireworks ban: 1,732 residents said they would like to prohibit the fireworks while 1,432 voted against the suggested ban.
