End of Trail for Antarctic Huskies
From Reuters
CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand —
New Zealand today announced the end of the trail for huskies in Antarctica because of an international campaign against the killing of seals for dog food.
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research announced that the 16 huskies at Scott Base will be allowed to die naturally or be destroyed within two years. A department official said more than 20 seals had to be killed last year because they were the staple diet of the specially-bred huskies.
