Running for office against a woman, according to Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos, “makes me feel small.”

Marcos is opposed in Feb. 7 elections by Corazon Aquino, the widow of opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr.

“The Filipino woman should be intelligent but demure. She can run her husband, but she should run him through the bedroom,” Marcos said in an interview published in the February issue of Life magazine.

Marcos’ wife, Imelda, meanwhile, disparaged “Cory” Aquino’s custom of always wearing yellow, the color of the opposition party.

“In this job you need a little more variety,” Imelda Marcos said. “Thank God, my skin looks good in many colors.”

She also ridiculed her husband’s opponent by calling her a self-pitying widow and boasted that she is more popular than Aquino.
