Year-Round Schools in L.A.

Share

I firmly support the Los Angeles school board’s approval of year-round school sessions, and wish it could become a national policy.

With thoughtful planning, it seems to me that neighborhood and family cohesiveness could be retained, and the advantageous effects on our future adults could far outweigh the disadvantages of the policy.

Children in Japan attend school at least 222 days out of the year. American children are in attendance from 170 to 185 days a year. Clearly, the Japanese school system is producing hard-working, innovative and creative people who are posing an economic threat to Americans. Why should not American children have the same opportunities?

Although I realize the purpose of the year-round system is not to give each child more school days per year (as it stands now) but to give more children access to school time and a higher standard of education, still I think the very concept will give Americans an outlook that emphasizes education more than recreation and “how to use idle time.”
