Killing of Million Kangaroos OKd

SYDNEY, Australia —
The federal government, ignoring opposition from environmentalists, announced today that more than 1 million kangaroos may be killed this year in a program aimed at controlling their population growth.
Rekindling an annual debate, environmentalists condemned the program, saying the hunting of Australia’s national symbol only benefits the commercial kangaroo industry, which reaped more than $9 million in exports of kangaroo meat and hides last year.
