Mayor Lionel Wilson met with both sides in the 3-week-old Oakland teachers’ strike and said, “We are making progress.” Teachers union President Connie Peoples also said there had been “some movement.” The district produced a verbal counter-offer and Peoples said she would present the proposal to union negotiators for consideration. “At this point there is some progress,” the Oakland Education Assn. chief said. “We are moving a little closer. The talks are significant.” Wilson, who stepped into the negotiations after they bogged down, said, “I’ll be here as long as both sides agree that I’m a positive force.”
