Long Beach : Campus Land Spurs Plans
The Long Beach City College Board of Trustees is considering three proposals from developers who want to build a shopping center on nine acres next to the campus.
The college has announced plans to sell or lease the land--at the corner of Lakewood Boulevard and Carson Avenue--to raise money for the renovation of nearby Veterans Stadium. Under a recent contract with the city, the college took control of the stadium and agreed to provide $3 million in renovations to the facility over the next three years.
Proposals have been presented by Gemtel Corp. of Los Angeles, Market Place Properties of Newport Beach and the nationwide Trammel Crow Corp. of Pasadena. Each of the developers proposed for the property a shopping center with one major tenant and a number of smaller shops. All indicated that they would prefer to buy the land rather than lease it.
The college leases part of the parcel--assessed at about $5 million--to McDonnell Douglas Corp. for employee parking. Also at the site are the college’s baseball diamond, several tennis and volleyball courts and some bungalows used in the college’s aviation maintenance program.
The board is likely to make a decision at its next regular meeting Tuesday, according to college spokeswoman Arlyss Burkett.
