Brea : Council Votes to Outlaw Private July 4 Fireworks
Fireworks won’t be allowed in Brea this Independence Day--except for the city-sponsored display.
On a 3-2 vote, the City Council on Tuesday formally adopted a ban on fireworks that will go into effect in 30 days.
Council members supporting the ban--Mayor Clarice Blamer, Mayor Pro Tem John Sutton and Norma Hicks--said it will help prevent fires. Those against it--Gene Leyton and Nelson Carrey--have said it will be unenforceable.
Brea voters approved the ban in an advisory election last Nov. 5 by a margin of 1,732 to 1,432. Council members supporting the fireworks ban claimed that the voters requested the prohibition while those opposing it said the numbers were too close and too small to represent a mandate from the voters.
At the same time, the council gave initial approval to an ordinance that would allow Brea to continue its annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Brea-Olinda High School.
In other matters, the council scheduled further discussion of development blueprints for the Carbon Canyon area for a public hearing Feb. 18.
