Standing near the home of Peace Memorial Park Chapel in East Los Angeles, 14 Los Angeles area clergymen called for an end to the death penalty. The group, which included a cross section of denomionations, issued a statement that asked “members of our religious communities to give this matter their immediate prayerful attention.” Roman Catholic Archbishop Roger Mahony, said that while the group recognizes the desire of the public for crime-free streets, the death penalty only promotes “vengeance, hatred, and violence.”
