Mexico Earthquakes Speeds Action on Reorganization Plan
Budget and Planning Secretary Carlos Salinas de Gortari says 10,000 government employees already have been moved from Mexico City to provincial cities as part of the post-earthquake decentralization plan.
He presided over a meeting last week of the decentralization committee, part of the National Commission for Reconstruction.
Decentralization has been talked about here for years to brake Mexico City’s rapid growth toward becoming the world’s largest metropolitan area, but the plans gained new impetus after the widespread destruction caused by the Sept. 19 earthquake.
