‘Economic Witchcraft’
Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) stood tall among the politicians recently. After voting against the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings budget balancing bill, he said to the press, “I have to vote in ways that I believe are intelligent and wise, without regard to the consequences in terms of elections.”
Cranston exhibited a true understanding of and, more important, an acceptance of the philosophy of our republic as opposed to a democracy. We do not make our own laws. We elect men and women to do that for us. We put our trust in their judgment and ability to do homework on our behalf.
Cranston cut across the grain of conservatism because he felt that he was elected to use his judgment. State Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia) must understand what Sen. Cranston did. The conservative Davis voted for a gay rights bill, a definite liberal issue, about a year ago. He did so because, in his judgment, such a law was needed and he was elected to do what he felt was right.
My hat is off to both men, not because I agree or disagree with either of them. They understand our republic and the principles for which it stands!
