As a former newshen, I have tried to maintain my objectivity and unflappability when reading news articles and social commentaries that do not necessarily reflect my personal viewpoint. However, Gary Libman’s above-the-fold story on “Single Women and Married Lovers” in View on Jan. 12 must have raised my blood pressure by 20 points.

That article is a shameful expression of opinion even for these “anything goes” times for a respectable and nationally read newspaper to publish. Such tripe surely belongs in the pulpy yellow journalism types purchased near the local supermarket checkout stand.

Psychologist JoAnn Bitner and her ilk seek to absolve themselves of blame for committing that lowest of deceits--adultery--with their wringing of hands and moaning “Poor little us. Let’s form a support group and legitimize our position.” Naturally, women in the same situation--that of destroying a marriage--will band together and praise each other.

Don’t any of them think with anything other than their lower extremities? Too bad Lisa and Cynthia and Toni and Bitner and the rest don’t direct their time and energy spent cheating another woman into more socially acceptable channels--the Little Sister program described just below the “Single Women” article is only one of thousands of groups who could use devoted volunteers. Bitner et al. could even try to find their own man rather than barracudize another woman’s.
