NEW YORK — Roone Arledge has relinquished day-to-day control of ABC Sports in order to concentrate on the network’s sagging news department, it was announced today.
The move comes as ABC’s evening news show remains third in the ratings, behind both the leader, CBS, and NBC.
Arledge, 54, who has been president of ABC Sports since 1968 and of ABC News since 1977, will be replaced as head of the sports department by Dennis Swanson, formerly president of the ABC-owned stations.
Swanson will report to Arledge, who was given the title of group president of ABC News and Sports. Arledge retained the title of presi-dent of ABC News.
