The Chicago Black Hawks did part of what they had to do Monday night--they shut out Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky.

But, commendable a feat as that was, it still was not enough to beat the Oilers, who skated to their 35th victory of the season, a 4-3 win at Chicago.

Gretzky had just two shots on goal and saw his 39-game scoring streak come to an end. It marked only the second time in 50 games this season that Gretzky hasn’t collected at least one point.

“Naturally, I’m disappointed I could not have bettered my mark (of 51 straight games), but we got the two points, so what else matters?” Gretzky said.

“But, the Black Hawks could not shut down the (Mark) Messier line, and anytime you concentrate on me, you’ll pay for it.”

Messier scored midway through the opening period, but Al Secord tied it at 1-1 when he scored off his own rebound on a Chicago power-play.

The Oilers regained the lead on the first of two goals by Messier’s linemate Glenn Anderson, but Chicago’s Darryl Sutter scored with less than two minutes left in the first period to tie it at 2-2.

Mark Napier broke the tie in the second-period, and Anderson’s second goal with less than four minutes to play gave Edmonton a 4-2 advantage. Chicago’s Bob Murray got the the Black Hawks’ final goal 17 seconds later.

Minnesota 6, New Jersey 2--Marc Habscheid, playing in his first NHL game for Minnesota, scored twice in the first period as the North Stars coasted past the Devils at Bloomington, Minn.

Habscheid, acquired in a trade with Edmonton last month, had just been called up from Minnesota’s minor league team in Springfield, Mass.

After the 22-year-old center gave the North Stars a 2-0 lead, they eventually built a 5-0 advantage before goaltender Don Beaupre lost his shutout bid in the third period.

New York Rangers 6, Quebec 6--Mark Pavelich scored with 10 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the Rangers to a tie with the Nordiques at Quebec.

The Rangers were pressing the Nordiques in a last-gasp attempt to get the tying goal when Pavelich fired a rebound past Quebec goaltender Clint Malarchuk.

Bob Brooke and Don Maloney each scored a pair of goals for New York, while Michel Goulet scored twice for Quebec.

Boston 6, Hartford 3--Defenseman Ray Bourque broke a 3-3 tie with his 13th goal of the season at 7:33 of the third period and the Bruins went on to beat the Whalers at Boston.

Bourque drilled a 35-foot slapshot past goalie past Mike Liut after center Steve Kasper won the draw on a face-off in the Hartford zone.

Barry Pederson scored his 16th goal about 4 1/2 minutes later and Mats Thelin added a power-play goal with nine seconds left as the Bruins posted their fifth victory in the last six games and snapped Hartford’s five-game winning streak.

Montreal 4, Buffalo 1--Mats Naslund scored twice and goaltender Doug Soetaert made 22 saves as the Canadiens turned away the Sabres at Montreal.

Naslund scored his first goal with 16 seconds left in the first period and notched his second at 1:35 of the third when he lifted Stephane Richer’s pass over Sabre goaltender Jacques Cloutier.
