Three Minnesota Basketball Players Held in Wisconsin Charged With Sexual Assault

MADISON, Wis. — First-degree sexual assault charges were filed Monday against two University of Minnesota basketball players in an attack reported by an 18-year-old woman.
The Dane County District Attorney’s Office also filed charges of second-degree sexual assault against the players, Mitchell Lee, 20, of Carol City, Fla., and Kevin Smith, 21, of Lansing, Mich. A third player, George Williams Jr., 19, of Oakland, Calif., was charged with one count of second-degree sexual assault.
The charges were signed by Asst. District Attorney Judith Hawley and Detective Robert Lombardo.
A student at Madison Area Technical College reported Friday that she was attacked at a downtown hotel where the Minnesota team stayed Thursday after defeating Wisconsin in a Big Ten basketball game.
At their initial court appearance Monday afternoon, Dane County Court Commissioner Todd Meurer set a $5,500 cash bail for Lee, $4,000 for Smith, and $1,000 for Williams. A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 6.
