Jockey Humberto Enriquez came within one victory of the North American record by riding winners of the first seven thoroughbred races on the 11-race card Sunday at Agua Caliente race track in Tijuana.
Enriquez, 22, the leading rider at Agua Caliente, was stopped in the eighth race when his horse finished in eighth place. Of his last three mounts Sunday, only one finished in the money, with a third-place finish in the 10th race.
The North American record of riding eight horses to victory in one card was set by jockey Hubert S. Jones on June 11, 1944, at Caliente, and equaled twice.
